#Just5Minutes – Workout in Hotel Gym While Away for My Best Friend’s Wedding

RP from my Instagram Account – #Just5Minutes – Practicing what I preach. I’m working to officially “launch” EDS Wellness & the Strength/Flexibility/Health/EDS site, the #Just5Minutes initiative, working on program development, wellness counseling, another integrative wellness retreat (Wellapalooza), a physician learning conference and more! But taking the time to focus and enjoy one of my best friend’s weddings. And of course, making sure to get my workout in no matter what – even in another hotel gym.

#Just5Minutes – Zengo Cycle Date with my Husband Day 3

Three days of Zengo in a row = Three days of intense workouts = Three days of sweating like crazy = Three days of feeling great.

Exercise is our medicine, good nutrition is our fuel, and sleep &  meditation is our restoration.

Older picture from a Zengo cycling date from a Zengo Cycling date a few years ago, but still fits for today

#Just5Minutes – Zengo Cycle Date with My Husband

There’s something about starting your day, or the weekend, with a great workout — today it was Zengo Cycle

Done and done! Well, except for the doughnuts we promised the kids that we would bring home.

Yeah… There went all those calories we burned, but at least my legs are getting stronger. Cycling regularly helps with fluid retention issues in my legs and above my knees — at least, that’s my hope.

Below are pics of my knees after paddle boarding on vacation. The problem wasn’t paddleboarding. I am conditioned enough to handle paddle boarding, and it’s one of my favorite outdoor activities — especially paddleboard yoga. However, I guess my body didn’t like me paddleboarding on my knees, and it only made the swelling issue in my legs worse. I had no pain, nothing, but a few family members competed on my knees. So, I took a picture because I couldn’t “see” what they were referring to.

I was a bit shocked, alarmed, and a bit concerned — to say the least.

No pain. No injury. Just fluid retention thanks in part to MCAS and EDS.

What is Wanderlust 108?

“Wanderlust 108 is a field day for your mind, body and soul. Hold the plastic trophy, because we have better prizes: vibrant community, self-awareness and inner peace. Community instead of competition? You can’t beat that.

“Sure, it doesn’t seem as strenuous as running a marathon, lifting several hundred pounds, or sweating through a Hatha yoga class, but walking is just as effective a workout as any other! Regular, brisk walking can help you maintain a healthy weight, prevent or manage conditions like high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes, improve your balance, and boost your mood. Incorporate more walking into your day by parking at the back of the parking lot, going for an after dinner stroll with your family, or taking an extra lap around the grocery store before checking out.”

Adaptive Yoga – Yoga for All!

Most know how much I love yoga, and how strongly I feel about it being perfectly safe when done right for those with Hypermobility. There are also countless types of yoga, including Restorative Yoga, where you do more laying down, relaxing, and meditating than moving. There’s also Chair Yoga, Yoga Nidra, and much more!

Yoga Nidra, a type of meditative yoga practice, is one of my favorite types of yoga by far! The Restorative Yoga class at The Mindfulness Center during Wellapalooza 2016, which was led by Dr. Norris, had many of us in tears. Restorative Yoga, and yoga, in general, can be incredibly powerful and healing — and it certainly was that day.

In addition to my yoga for hypermobility/Ehlers-Danlos syndrome/Mindfulness for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome program that will be offered in November (series of 4 classes as part of my Seva requirement for Yoga Teacher Certification), below is information on both an adaptive/all-accessible yoga conference by Accessible Yoga, and another endeavor started by Body Positive Yoga & her best friend11350582_579221962181447_2496065964860379381_n.

Read below — and make sure to look for the survey link!

“I am *SO* excited about this project that I’m co-creating with my BFF Genevieve. And I need your help… please read on.

Genevieve says…

“Yoga has been a part of my life since I was 17. I was dismayed to find out when I became disabled that there were not very many videos to help me further my yoga practice. Many of the chair yoga videos that do exist require you to stand behind the chair or just didn’t resonate with me.

“If you’re disabled like me, you know that a lot of life just isn’t accessible to you – including most yoga studios and classes. I talked about this with my best friend Amber (a yoga teacher that specializes in adaptive practice for all bodies), and she and I decided that the “spoonie” community needed their very own yoga videos.

12794642_1154175224601788_4117557018425790504_n“Amber and I are teaming up to create a set of videos for the “spoonies” who want to learn how to move their bodies but don’t know where to start.

“If you’re interested in this resource, we’d love to know more about you so that we can tailor these videos to what the community needs – please take this short survey and help us make this the best it can be!

Gentle Stretching Yoga with my oldest baby

I love 6:30pm Gentle Stretching Yoga at The Mindfulness Center with Jessie Norris on Wednesdays. I don’t get to go often, but when I do, I usually invite my oldest son, or my husband to join me.

Jessie’s class is the perfect introduction for anyone who’s wanted to try yoga, but has never had the guts. Her classes are calming and unpretentious – all are welcome. People of all ages, mobility levels, shapes, and sizes attend her classes.

Each week can be a bit different, and this week Jessie focused on more Restorative Yoga with some gentle flow yoga mixed in.

My son loved it and asked to be able to go again. Considering he started middle school this week and is almost 12 years old, I’ll take all the time he wants to spend with me at this point. I think taking him shooing for clothes for PE afterwards may have helped also, but I like to think he does enjoy hanging out with me — even just a tiny bit.

Before yoga, we also took our baby girl Else to the vet to have the “Cone of Shame” removed, and to have her stitches out.

She was literally smiling afterwards – so cute!
